Understanding The MPLS Cloud Diagram
Multiprotocol Label switching, which is also known as MPLS is a high-end technology that is used in managing networks and help speed up any network traffic. It is used in large corporations that have several branches in several locations. It creates a venue for interconnection of all branches. An example is when a company's headquarters want to connect with its several branches. To further understand how the technology works, an MPLS cloud is created to show the process.
Multiprotocol Label Switching Cloud is a diagram or representation of how MPLS sends data packets. The cloud is made up of Provider routers which sit on the middle of the diagram and it is surrounded by Provider edge routers. The Provider edge routers are surrounded by customer sites. The role of the provider edge router is to connect the customer sites. The Provider router's role is to detect data packets, sort it out and send it to its appropriate destination.
How will the routers efficiently send the data packets to its destination? In an MPLS network, data packets are pre-labeled so that label routers do not need to read the whole data packet but only reads the label of the data packet. The label includes the destination, source and quality of service requirements.
The input begins when data packets enter its specific paths. Specific paths are created for the packet in order to manage traffic in a network. The data packet goes to the provider edge routers and it reaches the main provider router where it reads the packet labels and send it back out to the edge routers and then to its appropriate site destination.
The process is the simplest way to understand the cloud of MPLS. It represents how the networks connect to each other and exchange data. It explains where data goes and how it is going to be sent. This kind of process also minimizes redundancies and errors during the exchange of data.
Many companies are using MPLS because it creates a private network. It is enough to secure information exchange in a company. MPLS works with Frame Relay Network Protocols, Internet Protocols (IP), and Asynchronous Transport Mode (ATM) that is why it is multiprotocol.
The process of MPLS is a very broad topic and to easily understand the core of the process, one must look into the MPLS cloud. It vividly explains how things work inside the MPLS network. It also helps one understand how traffic is managed in a network. MPLS is abundantly used in Wide Area Network.
